In the neighborhoods of our state capitol, surveillance cameras sit watching atop telephone poles.  Directly outside of residents’ homes, the cameras can even see inside bedrooms and living rooms with just the approval of the city’s technology official.  Lansing is not alone in its disregard for citizens’ privacy.  Cities around the country and around the world are engaging in mass surveillance.  This is a trend that must be challenged and stopped immediately.

It is time for major structural change in the Detroit Public Schools (DPS). Under the Detroit Board of Education, DPS has failed the students that it serves by almost every measure. The city needs to find a new path for its schools and would be wise to drop the board that saw the system to its present state.

In winter 2008, times looked bleak for the GOP. With charismatic Democratic President-elect Barack Obama hurtling toward inauguration day with an astronomical 69 percent approval rating, Time Magazine’s cover boldly proclaimed the Republican Party an “Endangered Species.”

Islamophobia, an irrational fear of and prejudice against Islam and its followers, has always existed.  The 2010 elections, however, exploited and expanded this fear so that it became louder, angrier, and expressed publicly with pride.  In a sea of examples of that hate-filled rhetoric leaking into our local communities and day-to-day life, it has become clear that the University of Michigan has not been immune.

The Spill

On the evening of July 25th, a 30-inch oil pipeline owned by the Enbridge Energy Partners LLP. ruptured, leaking gallons of crude oil directly into the Talmadge Creek and Kalamazoo River. A combination of wind and heavy rains quickly carried oil almost 30 miles downstream on the Kalamazoo River, a tributary of Lake Michigan.

The last time I sat down with a fellow Wolverine who was homeschooled, I could barely hear her over the screams of her floral pattern dress. She had made it herself back at “the Compound,” amidst preparations for the imminent Rapture. I mentioned science and tears quickly welled in her eyes before she stumbled up and ran sobbing from the room. I never saw her again.

Just kidding.

This summer, the annual battle over the Michigan budget will once again demand media attention as Democrats and Republicans organize special interests to shape the way our government contracts with its citizens.

At the end of the budget process, Michigan citizens may see the state abandon the status quo and take a fundamentally different approach to taxes, education, corrections and a host of other state programs.

The University of Michigan prides itself on the cultural diversity of its student body. Along with this diversity comes markers of difference – some invisible, some impossible to miss. Among such markers is the hijab, a head covering worn by Muslim women in accordance with religious traditions of modesty.

Q:  So another Valentine’s Day is quickly approaching and here I am, single and without a man for another Hallmark holiday. This could be due to the fact that I seem to only be drawn to the “bad boy” type, whom I know will eventually treat me like shit and leave me with the only good men I’ve ever known, Mr. Ben & Jerry. Why I am only attracted to bad guys and why do I keep letting ruin my love life?
